Hello Foxinn,
It sounds like you do not remember the passcode on your iPod nano. Use the following steps to unlock your iPod nano:
Unlocking iPod
You can unlock iPod in one of two ways:
If you can't unlock iPod using either of these methods, you can restore your iPod to factory settings. Please note that this will erase all data on your iPod. Afterwards, you can add your music and data back to iPod. If you want to change the primary computer that your iPod is associated with, do this:
- Enter the combination on iPod using the same controls you used to set the combination. If you do not enter the correct combination, the digits onscreen flash red. When you enter the combination correctly, iPod will unlock and return you to the last viewed screen.
- Connect iPod to the primary computer you use it with (the first one iPod synced with), and open iTunes. When you disconnect iPod from the computer, it will no longer be locked.
- Restore your iPod. Warning: The restore process cannot be undone. All of your songs and files will be deleted. Always make a backup of your important data.
- Connect your iPod to the computer that you want to be the primary computer.
- Open iTunes and synchronize.

This does not work. To restore iPod nano it asks for the password.
Do you have a Touch or a Nano? It should not ask for a passcode when restoring a nano in iTunes.
It's a nano, I don't know if it's because I have to restore and update at the same time, but it is definitely asking for a passcode.
Can't help you then, I don't know of any means to put a Nano in recovery mode. You might want to make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store.
There is a bit of an... unorthodox... way to do it. This is for the Mac, there's probably a similar method for a PC. Connect your iPod nano to your Mac. Open Disk Utility. Select "Apple iPod Media" from the sidebar. Click the Erase button. Leave all of the fields as they are, and click "Erase" again. After it's done, disconnect the iPod (ignore the eject warning). Reboot and re-connect it. It should be displaying a "do not disconnect" screen that looks like the one seen on the very first iPod. iTunes should then say it's detected an iPod in Recovery mode, and you can go from there. Note: I have not tested this with older nanos, but even if it becomes a brick, it's not much worse than not being able to get in due to forgetting the passcode.
Update: I was successful in doing this procedure on a 1st generation nano as well, and thus have reason to believe it would work for all models (I've now done this with the 1st, 6th and 7th).
Whoooaaaa, Nelly this worked. my iPod nano is clear of all media. I am up and running again. thanks so much. Cath
I am glad it was able to help you. 🙂
nope not showing up in disk utility either
