Java

Dear Support Communitie,

I am having issues with Java in trying to establish a VPN connection, I am instructed as follows:

  1. open Apple menu > System Preferences... > Security & Privacy > General tab
  2. be sure 'Allow applications downloaded from: anywhere' is selected
  3. download and install Java
  4. open Safari Preferences, click the Security tab and choose "Manage Website Settings..."
  5. select Java on the left then https://name.edu on the right, select "Run in unsafe mode" in the pull-down
  6. open the Java Control Panel, select the Security tab
  7. add https://name.edu to the Manage Site List (whitelist)

I encounter the fist problem at step 5. where after choosing "Run in unsafe mode" I select "Trust" but nothing happens and the best I get selected is "Allaw Allways".

Even after step 7. everytime I try to use a Java application (from the website I listed in step 7.) I still get:

Do you want to Continue?

The connection to the website is untrusted

Website https://name.edu:443

I choose "Continue" but I have a Plug-in Failure.

Moreover when I try to test Java I am told:

"Application Blocked.

The application was blocked enven though the host site of the html file at: https://name.edu/.../... is included in Exeption List because the application refers

to resources on multiple domains.

The jpnl file https://java/en/download/.../... is on different domainand is not also included on Exeption Site List"

So I add https://java.com to the Exeption list. It recognizes my effort but Java applications stay blocked.

I hope someone can help, thanks very much in advance.

Luigi, I'm not a Java expert, but I do believe some of your settings are dangerous to your Mac. What I've read says that Java can be used (for example, if you bank requires it), but you need to lock it down so it's not useable by "whoever." I found your post looking for an article I saw previously that told how to lock it down. I'll post again once I find that link. In the mean time, I recommend disabling Java.
