Q: Please help me, my macbook pro is slow!

This is directed to LexSchellings

I ran the scan you requested others run, and I am just having issues with speed of my macbook. My wife and I have a profile and independent iphotos and itunes. I know it ran faster before, and I am hoping you can help get it back to the old speed. Thanks.

1. Uninstall Macaffee. You don't need antivirus software on a Mac if you exercise common sense. Don't just drag it to the trash, use the uninstall.

2. What are you doing with iPhoto? It seems to be taking over the system. You might want to close and restart it unless it's building some kind of index or something. I'm not an iPhoto guy, but you can see it's hogging the CPU at the time you took this.

Ok I will uninstall Macaffee, I seem to remember it slowing down shortly after I got that now that I think about it. Also, I was updating the library with the new OS update while I was running the program.

So i attempted to remove Macaffee and some other programs I no longer need or want. All I did was under the application folder hit sent to trash, and there is still a Macaffee icon on the top of my screen even after a restart. I ran the program again and got the following.

Always always always go to the developer for uninstall instruction before attempting something like that. Nobody here is going to be able to tell you all the files that must be unloaded and trashed. Since I have no idea what McAfee product you have, I'll guess it's this, otherwise I'm sure Google or the McAfee site can get you to the correct one.

Oh, and be sure to update Flash Player since Adobe says it's a priority 1 security issue.

I am late here, thanks for the help already by Mad and Bob.
McAfee is still there. The uninstall is either not done or incomplete.
Here is a link with help how to uninstal mcafee:

Here some more cleaning up, all you need is use Finder:
In the Finder menu clickthe GO menu while holding the Alt(option) kex, click Library, The Library folder opens and in there click the LaunchAgents folder open, and in there delete
com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-[...]@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist
Then in Finder go to the startdisk and click Library open (this is another Library), and in there click the InternetPlugins folder open: in there delete
AdobePDFViewer and
AdobePDFViewerNPAPI
these two don't do anything for you in Mavericks.
After you have done, post a new etrecheck list, so that we can check for leftovers that are started.

Hmm, well they still work and some users prefer to use them for some reason (I don't) and you can still read PDF documents without them.

Hi Mad, about these PDFviewer plugins. Effectively they don't do anything in Mavericks but are still installed with Adobe software (Reader, Acrobat). I did not say they don't work, but said they don't do anything in Mavericks.

The only way to correctly fill out a form online (or offline) is to use the Adobe plug-ins for Safari and not the buit-in WebKit viewer. Unfortunately, the Adobe plug-ins don't work with all browers (I normally use Firefox, but when I encounter an Acrobat form, I switch to Safari with the Adobe plug-ins).

Hi Clinton, very good, thank you for this contribution. I will be a bit more careful with the adobe pdfviewers. I never enter information in a pdf document in any browser in order to avoid 'accidents'. If I want to use a document, I download it and then fill what is necessary.

When filling out forms that you want to submit back to the hosts, just make sure that you use Adobe Reader and not Preview (Preview makes the IRS foms-designers pull out their hair!).

Lex, I was able to reinstall the Mcafee and then use the correct uninstall process, but I cannot find the Library in the startdisk, not sure what you mean with that.

Then in Finder go to the startdisk and click Library open (this is another Library), and in there click the InternetPlugins folder open: in there delete

The adobepdfviewer plugins don't hurt, so let it be. Look at the posts about this by Clinton and me.
The other one com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert.... has to go (from 'old' days).
