Safari, Google Maps street view, and Flash

Because I don't want to install Flash on my Mini, I have to switch to Chrome if I want to see something in Street View in Google Maps.

Yesterday, I opened Street View in Safari by mistake ... and it worked.

I still don't have Flash installed.

Has something been done in the meantime?

I'm running Safari 7.0.2 and my Mini has OSX 10.9.2. Just checked, and this is also the case for my Air, running same versions and also without Flash.

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

This change means that now, about the only time I do have to switch from my preferred browser (Safari) to one with Flash integrated (Chrome) is when I want to watch videos on the BBC news site.

Just in case anyone's in the same boat and wants to avoid the slight inconvenience of copying and pasting the url each time this happens, you can speed things slightly by activating Safari's Develop menu.

Go to Safari's Prefs/Advanced, and at the bottom is a checkbox for 'Show develop menu in menu bar', which you should tick.

Then, when you're at a page that demands Flash, go to Develop in the menu bar, go to the top item, 'Open Page With', navigate to the browser you want (Chrome is best for this), and open up. Subsequently, Chrome should be there ready for you to click.

Yes — as someone commented a month ago:

"Brace yourselves! The new Google Maps with WebGL goodness are rolling out!" (Google's Official Blog)

And:

"WebGL (Web Graphics Library) is a JavaScript API for rendering interactive 3D graphics and 2D graphics within any compatible web browser without the use of plug-ins." (Wikipedia)

"WebGL and 3D graphics" (Google)

By the way, you may like this 3rd party web-app for exploring an area:

http://www.instantstreetview.com

...Once you've entered an address, click on the button Random Street View from the current map or the R key. The new random destination is limited to within the area of the zoomable map.
