Another thought, what version of Mac OS X are you using?

Do you have iCloud > Notes checked on both the MacBook Pro and iPhone?

OK, just checked Notes in the iPhone settings (was already checked in MacBookPro System Pref/iCloud...I'm running Mavericks (unfortunately) ...it keeps saying I need to synch Notes thru a special iCloud email address which I did create several days ago...not sure what this means.
