My iphone is unable to join a wifi network created by my macbook pro

I've gone through all the usual steps to create a wifi hotspot using my macbook pro, in order to send internet to my iphone 4s from the ethernet cable plugged into my laptop. The arrow is there on the wifi icon on my macbook pro, and the network comes up on my phone, but then when i enter the password, the message comes up "unable to join network". Any ideas?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Hey there JaredVaile,

It sounds like you are unable to join a Wi-Fi network created by your MacBook Pro with your iPhone. I would start by restarting your phone, then trying again:

Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.

After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.

If you still cannot connect, I would next use the following information to help troubleshoot the connection:

iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

Unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network

  1. Verify that you're attempting to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
  2. Make sure you're entering your Wi-Fi password correctly. Passwords may be case sensitive and may contain numbers or special characters.
  3. Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
    • previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    • recently used Bluetooth accessories
    • VPN and APN settings

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Thank you for updating me on the issue. I would next try backing up your device with this article:

iOS: How to back up and restore your content

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

And restore it with this article as new to test the Wi-Fi connection:

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414

If that works without issue, try restoring your backup and verifying that it still works.
