Why are there lines on my photos in iPhoto?

I'm having 'lines' show up in my iphoto(s)...Has anyone else experienced this and do you know how to fix it if you have?

This drove me crazy til today. I'm an avid photographer. No way to get my pics onto my iPad except via email. most of pics have black lines on the right side ruining my future posts. I found a couple of "sometimes works" fixes and then I discovered this today.

Download Photoshop Express. It's free from Adobe. Simple pull your bad pics in, resave them, and viola, lines magically disappear. As a matter of fact, when you're selecting the pics from your gallery, they don't even appear!!

I Have no idea what's up with the iPad. Looks like the files are actually undamaged, but for some reason the iPad is showing and posting them damaged. Strange.

I Hope this helps all of you frustrated photographers like me. Purely coincidental that I stumbled on this today.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:

  • what version of iPhoto are you using?
  • what system version are you running?
  • where do you see the lines? In the full sized version? In the thumbnails? Both?
  • what fixes have you tried?
  • where is your library located?
  • did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
  • are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?

  • what type of Mac?
  • how much free space on your boot drive?

I see a reply by Old Toad....I know you're going to think this is ridiculous, but I have never discussed in a support forum and I don't know how to answer you, Old Toad!! But in replying to my original post, I see the lines (looks like a section of the photo is 'pixelated'!!), I guess, when I'm editing with iPhoto. My iPhoto version is '09...8.1.2. If I view the photo on full screen, it looks normal!

Thanks for responding, Old Toad.

I did just upgrade to Maverick and I would have to get my 'computer' husband to help me answer all the question you supplied in your comment. I have no idea the answer to many of them. Just thought there might be a quick fix!!

The software of the Apple Support Community Forums is acting up today. 😟 Frequently the answers are hidden. If you get an email notification of an answer but don't see it, just post something in answer to the last post you are seeing, and then the previous answers will be revealed.

If I view the photo on full screen, it looks normal!

Perhaps you need to rebuild the thumbnails, if the full-screen photo is o.k.

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and select the option "Rebuild all of the Photo's Thumbnails", unless Old Toad has a different suggestion.

Thanks, hummel_hummel....I went back and re-edited the picture I was trying to post. I reset the adjustment bars and the line seems to have gone away. But it's def something I'm doing on the 'Adjust' box of iPhoto edit! Thanks so much for helping! I will still rebuild the thumbnails. I don't see how that could hurt!

Old Toad....The lines are definitely in the edited versions. I think there's just something screwy with my iPhoto editing software. I don't know if there's a way to update this or not. I DO use it a lot! I'm an amateur photographer! They are not grid lines. What will happen is that I will edit and initially, it looks okay! I will click 'Done'...and then if I click again, to share (facebook, etc), it's like half the photo is darker than the other half. This can happen either vertically or horizontally. The 'division' looks sort of pixelated...in other words, it might be a completely straight dividing line for a few centimeters...and then it will 'indent'..either inward or outward...As a matter of fact, I guess I can share a photo here so you can see!!User uploaded file

While viewing an edited photo with the lines try resizing the iPhoto window just a bit. What happens?

Also export the edited photo out of iPhoto via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export with Kind = Current. Open it in Preview and see if the lines exist.

You are editing with iPhoto, right? As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some of the same photos and test to see if the same editing problem persists. Does it?

And export the original photo "File > Export, with Kind = Original". The thumbnails of photos may be looking o.k., but if the original is having a problem, you may only seeing it after editing.

Sometimes strange lines can be caused by bad blocks on the drive, or by fective RAM.

For example, I saw funny blocks like this on a few of my photos, because the drive had bad blocks.

When I checked, the original image had changed on the disk and so the edited image was showing the hidden corruption.
