I have several nice new Ext. Harddrives, bu they have USB2 connectors, NOT firewire. Is that why Imovie has been crashing. Should I use on of my old firewire hardrives (that are only 250gb!

Did you remember to format them as HFS Extended (Journaled)?
Does the type of wire really matter. Somebody told me it had to be fire wire. Also I have over 100 mini-dv tapes I need to upload on to it, so it has to work smoothly!

the speed does matter.
usb2 could be too slow, e.g. when you use several drives simultanously and perform several tasks simultanously. tech background: usb is a CPU-task and works with 'packages'; firewire is a 'stream' and doesn't strain the CPU.
usb3 is fine; firewire is essentiell for transfer from miniDV.
use fast drives (rpm, cache); use a fast connections (usb2-usb3-firewire--thunderbolt); avoid any 'other' tasks while editing (e.g. Spotlight indexing, backups via usb, any CPU-consuming tasks). Use app as intended. 😉
