Do I need to load Maxtor External Drive software?

I just bought a Maxtor OneTouch III external hard drive. Is it really necessary to load the accompanying software? Can't I just connect the drive only?

iMac 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 1.5GB DDR SDRAM, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

No need to install it. It is likely just Windows software anyway.

If it does come with Mac software on the disk, it is probably the Retrospect Express backup software. You can try it, but a lot of people here - including myself - use SuperDuper instead.
