The settings in System Preferences> Network> need to be correct and the order

of items expected to be used to connect to the internet, dragged to put the one

you'd want, on the top of the list.

Mine's set to Location: 'Automatic' -- with Network Name: my airport base.

•Using network locations in OS X v 10.5 or earlier:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2712

My airport base station is at top of the left-side list. Other items in that list

include Ethernet (if you use Ethernet Cable, don't have a wireless base...

you'd click & drag that to the top.) These are two most used connections.

Inside this control panel, there is a click-on "Advanced" where more setting

options for connection methods can be chosen manually. If you use an

Ethernet cable some may need to be set, selected, and chosen. And other

kinds of connections you may never need can also be set/chosen here.

In "Advanced" my airport base station (my name for it) appears on the top

of the list here, & I have a check-box setting for the computer to remember

networks the computer has joined -- while not choosing to join new networks

since that may get me ones I can't use, without password access, etc.

If you have or want to see the AirPort icon in the main Apple menu bar,

the click-on box is here; some setting shortcuts can be accessed from

the AirPort antenna icon, next to the time in upper right corner. From here

when enabled, you can Choose to Join Another Network: This can be your

own network, if you enter the name and password. It can be that easy.

If you have an AirPort wireless base station, you also may need to go into

it and make selections; these also have their own password for security

and may use WPA2 or other such protocol. And 802.11b/g/n/ etc wi-fi.

The Sys Prefs> Network (panel) is the main pathway to accessing internet.

If you have gone this far (days ago) and have not located Apple Support

articles online, or via a Google search, post back & say what you've tried.

There is no super simple answer if nobody knows what you

may have tried or what the other internet hardware you have is.

Not sure what else to say, or why...

    Good luck & happy computing!
