I swapped out my old superdrive in my 17" G4 with a working one from a 17" MacBook Pro. It fits and the cable connects fine. The Powerbook now just beeps when I turn it on and does not power up. Is there something else I need to do to get the G4 to recognize the drive?

I would think it is the same compatibility problem you would have swapping a Windows PC drive with an Apple drive. Powerbooks are PPC and MacBook Pros are Intel procesors.
