Apps aren't loading?

I've recently gotten a new iPod because the last one had a broken home button, and I had a lot of apps on it previously that all show "Waiting". Even when I restart it and click on an app, it doesn't load. Should I just delete them and re-download them? Would re-downloading them erase any previously saved information?
