GPU/display issue?

Hi

I'm having a serious problem with a mid 2008 intel (alu) iMac (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo, running Mavericks). I think from my searching around that it may be a GPU issue, but could also be display.

The mac won't boot properly, getting no further than the grey screen with apple logo. If started up normally, this screen displays a checked pattern. It goes nowhere and the only way out is to do a hard shut down.

I can boot in safe mode though. In this mode, the mac generally seems to be functioning OK, but instead of checks I have a very fetching set of bands/stripes. They are sometimes pink and orange, but at the moment they are white and turquoise. Each band is made up of a series of eight stripes, each stripe a few pixels wide. There are 13 bands across the screen: the desktop can be seen underneath/through the bands and can also be seen normally between the bands (so I have normal bands and striped bands, each the same width, repeating across the screen). The cursor arrow attracts in own mini striped band - a square the same width as the main bands. (image upside down for some reason!).

As I say, my googling suggests that this is probably a GPU issue (the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, not the apparently dodgy NVIDIA one that seems to have cursed some early 2008 imacs). What I don't get is why I can boot in safe mode but not at all otherwise - what gets disabled in safe mode that allows it to bypass what is otherwise an apparently total barrier to successful booting? When I try to boot normally and get stuck on the Apple logo, I can hear the mac working away, but is just doesn't seem able to go all the way. The really weird thing is that even when it is stuck at this stage, I can still remotely access the iMac from my MBP - I can open and copy files over the network. This suggests that it is in fact sort of booted, but just not displaying itself. I cannot screen share though. When booted in safe mode, I can screen share, and the stripes show up on the shared screen view on the MBP. Again, this suggests to me it is a GPU issue, not a display issue.

Unfortunately, this is my old iMac whcih i have just passed on to my mother in law, who is based 250 miles from me. I am visiting for a few days and so need to either get it sorted or conclude that it's toast (seems little point in forking out for a new GPU for a near six year old machine, even if I could swap it). I don't mind taking it apart (I swapped the hard drive last year) if that woudl help identify the source of the problem.

Any ideas much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike

Unfortunately the disc is not with me at the moment. Given that the machine is now running Mavericks, I am unsure as to whether the disc based version of AHT would work, or whether the OS on the machine has to be the same as the OS on the install disc that contains AHT? Anyway, I tried running AHT by holding D at start up and only got as far as the apple logo and check pattern ie AHT did not appear and the machine did not boot.

Thanks

Col

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

Safe Mode in Mac OS X v10.5 or later also disables Quartz Extreme (hardware accelerated graphics)

There have been a few threads here where users removed the graphics kernel extensions, which allowed normal booting... albeit with reduced graphics performance & the inability to use DVD player etc.

How strange! This exact same thing happened to us tonight. I am currently running hardware tests. The initial short test said no problems, so I am now running extended tests. I have a late 2009 iMac. My husband clicked a link on Craig's list and got these flickery checkerboard across the whole screen. Had to shut down with power button. Started up and had the wide lines and then the checkerboard appearance. Zapped pram. I thought it started up good, logged in to my user and then the checkerboard appeared again.

Thanks for your input - I've now disabled quartz, to no apparent effect. I searched for the extension removal threads and followed instructions for loading extensions while in safe mode.

This revealed that 192 extensions failed to load, with only 46 seeming OK. The ones that failed were pretty wide ranging - certainly not all graphics related. I copied the 192 and removed them from the extensions folder and tried to reboot: kernel panic, system unable to find driver and unable to perform a kext scan. Won't now boot in safe mode. Luckily it's a Mavericks system as I have no install DVD but I do have a Time Machine back up, so currently doing a full system restore. Will be a bit more cautious with extension removal next time!

BTW, the bands/stripes are still there even as I am doing the system restore and the checkerboard pattern was there even as the machine refused to boot at all. I'm guessing that means it is definitely hardware, so I just need to narrow it down to the GPU rather than full logic board and find the extensions that are preventing a normal boot. Either way, the machine is unusable with the screen in its current state, so its probably all a bit pointless now.

Cheers

UPDATE:

System successfully restored from back up. I restored from a back up taken the day before the problems started, just in case something was done that caused the issue. That has made no difference: still can't normal boot, but safe boot worked. While safe booted, I have now removed the various ATI related extensions and I am now able to boot normally. There is defnitiely still a serious problem, but the screen pattern is now different - stripes all over rather than confined to the bands, but a bit more transparent:

Still not exactly usable, as the visible strips on this pic dance about and there are lots of single pixel wide lines in between. Still, it looks like some sort of progress, so I'll keep experimenting with graphics related extensions.

The quick hardware test showed no problems. I then ran the extended hardware test. It also showed no problems. I zapped the pram several times and that did absolutely nothing to fix things.I then started up in safe mode which apple says deletes a bunch of caches. The screen looked normal. But, lots of things were unusable. I decided to uninstall Java, which I had installed a week ago in order to help my step-mother navigate a web site that required it. I then rebooted normally and logged into a different user. Everything seemed normal. I then logged in as myself and everything has worked ever since. So, something fixed the issue, or it is intermittant and will happen again.

Hi Tammy (and anyone else who can help)

That's good news. Things at my end have gone a little strange. I put back all the extensions one by one and was able to boot nromally, even once all of them were back. I did however get a message that the ATI 2600 extension wasn't installed properly, but as it was still booting and I couldn't see any way to reinstall it (other than just popping it back in the extensions folder) I moved on. The screen was getting a bit worse, but still just striped rather than banded.

Having read further threads on similar problems, I decided to take the whole thing apart (great ifixit step by step guide). Nothing seemed amiss - all connections seemed secure, no obvious burnouts. Removed a LOT of dust and put everything back together again.

The machine started straight up when I plugged the power cord back in (I didn't get a chance to press the power button) - the screen flashed briefly round the edges and then stayed black. No stripes, no bands, no image.

I could hear the hard drive spinning, so pressed some buttons on the keyboard and got a warning tone, suggesting some sort of boot. I forced shut down and restarted and then tried to log in with the screen still blank. The bad news is that the screen has stayed black since then. The good news is I now have full remote access and can even screen share. The screen now has no bands when I screen share - I can see and interact with the full screen as normal and have managed to retrieve files etc over the network.

I am still deciding whether to order a new (second hand) video card. Looking in system profiler to get info on this it now shows no info AT ALL under graphics/display and in the 'more info' tab from the apple menu 'about this mac' version of system info it now says "No display detected". I am now unsure whether I have somehow 'blown' the display (I still get a brief white margin round the screen on start up) or whether both graphics card and screen are both goosed, or whether I should take it apart again to make sure the display itself is properly connected. If the graphics card was fubar, would I be able to see anything at all via screen sharing? I don't have an external display I can test it with. I don't want to fork out for GPU only to find it is the display.

Any views on next steps?

Interestingly, this just happened to me this week too. I am running a 2006 MacBookPro (Yonah) system which suddenly went flaky on me, with pixelated screen. Often, open windows would leave ghosts, that would smear across the screen as I dragged the window. Reboots (PRAM reset) didn't work, resulting in that grey blocky startup screen. Safe boot seems to return system to complete operating functionality, so GPU looks questionable. Looking into replacing the GPU and the thermal paste, while I'm in the system. iFixit seems to have a very nice site, so I'll go that route. Not looking forward to buying a new mac tomorrow though. Worth fixing the current one for the kids though. I hate waste.
