How do I get my new MacBook Air to recognize my Canon GL2?

My MacBook Air does not recognize my Canon GL2. I connect the GL2 via a firewire cable with thunderbolt adapter. The GL2 reads DV-In when connected but my mac does not display anything in iMovie. Please help! Any alternatives to passing video from the MiniDV tapes to my mac would also be greatly appreciated, thank you.
