Forcing a new HD to mount?

Hello there,

I recently installed a new HD in my 1999 clamshell iBook and am trying to reinstall OS X. When I boot from the install disc and use disc utility, the new HD is grayed out and will not mount. It seems to be partitioning the drive but I have a feeling it is not as it is taking 20 - 30 minutes to do so on a new drive... should definitely not be taking that long. Is it something with OS X and a newer drive or could the drive be defective or is it something else? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

iBook, Mac OS X (10.3.x), 1999 Clamshell 564MB RAM 300MHz G3

That is SO annoying! I had a similar problem last week (different Mac, different HD) and finally realised that the only way to get the thing back to normal was to move all the data to a different drive, then reformat and re-partition it.

Getting on for two days' work, what with 2.5TB to move around! 😟
