Keyboard shortcuts for selecting regions of a track

In whatever version of Garageband I had before 11, I could put the head(?) (where the track was currently playing) at a certain point in the track, hit shift+home and it would select the whole track to the beggining of the track. I could then cut that out and paste it into a new track. The only way I can figure out how to select aregion in a track is to use the mouse, but if it's a long song it's really annoying to drag it off the track and wait for it to scroll. Anyone know if there are new keyboard shortcuts for selecting a track?

TIA, Mark

Arrow-Righ selects the next Region and Arrow-left selects the previous Region.

If I understand your example correctly then how about this:

Your run the Project, the Playhead is moving along that one long Audio Region (whihc is selected) of your recording. At any time at your Payhead postion, use cmd+T to split the Region and hit the left-arrow key. Now the Region from the beginning upt ot the Split point (where the Playhead was) is selected.

You can then continue. select the remaining Region, hit cmd+T where you want to split, left arrow to select the Region before.

Would that work?

Hope that helps

Is there a way to move it in smaller increments?

Not that I know of.

But that doesn't mean you can figure out a workaround. How about the following solution:

Step 1

Another hidden Key Command is sh+cmd+comma and sh+cmd+period. They move the Cycle Area (even if it is disabled, gray) left or right by the amount of the Cycle Length. For example, Set the Cycle Length to 1/4 notes. Now that Key Command moves the Cycle Are back and forth by quarter notes.

Step 2

Remember the Stop Button in the Control Bar. This button can have three functions/appearances (See the excerpt from my new book “GarageBand X - How it Works”). When the Cycle Mode is active, you can toggle the Playhead between “Beginning of Project” and “Beginning of Cycle Area”.

The good news is that the action of “clicking on the Stop Button” has Key Command (again, not mentioned in Apple’s documentation). It is the “zero” key on the number pad of your keyboard.

Step 3

Now you combine all actions. You can use the Cycle Area to create finer resolution than 1 bar by setting the Cycle Length to a quarter note for example. Now use the first Key Command in step 1 to move the Cycle Area to the position you want, use the second Key Command to move the Playhead to the beginning of that Cycle Are (i.e. 10.3.1) and now use the cmd+T to cut the Region at the position.

As I said, it is a workaround but at least you can make it work (with some extra work)

Are you sure you mean signature?

Click on TIme Signature changes the Time SIgnature, Click on Key Signature lets you change the Key Signature.

Maybe you mean the Playhead Position, the four number values "beat-bar-division-tick" or the SMPTE time when the Display Mode ois set to "Time". If that's the one you are referring to, then you are right.

So far we wer only discussing key commands to move the Playhead, but while we are at it, here is the complete picture on how to move the Playhead.

Use Transport Buttons

See the explanation above.

Use Key Commands

Use the comma-key (the one with the < sign) to move to the previous bar and the period-key (the > sign) to move the Playhead to the next bar.

Moving Playhead Position

You can slide each number value of the Playhead Position in the Control Bar Display up and down which moves the Playhead based on those increments. THis works in Absolute Time Display (hh:mm:ss:ff:sf) and Musical TIme Display (beat-bar-division-tick)

Moving Playhead

Another hidden command exists with the Playhead directly. Here is the behavior

  • Moving the Playhed is based on a grid. The default is beats
  • The more you zoom in *horiztonatlly" on the Workspace, the finer these grid and therefore the increments get
  • Ctr+Drag (moving the Playhead while holding down the control key) disables the grid and you can move the Playhead freely

External Control Surface

You can use an external control surface like an iPad running the Logic Remote app. It provides commands that are not available in GarageBand drectly.
