iPhone 4 not recognised in iTunes

Yes, I know this is a common query, but I have tested all the published checks and fixes but to no avail.

Strangely, when I connect my iPhone 4 to my PC, it's recognised by my PC without problem, but when I connect my wife's iPhone 4 to the same PC with the same cable, hers is not recognised.

Even more strangely, connecting her iPhone to the PC prompts the "Trust this computer" dialog box on her phone, but when I click on "Trust", it just launches a dialog box on the PC prompting to run various photo editing software or MS Word, and if I click on "Cancel" I just get taken back to the "Trust this computer" prompt and go around and around in circles...

We both have the latest and same IOS loaded onto our phones.

The issue appears to be with her phone, not the PC. Any ideas what to do to identify and fix the problem?

Thanks in advance... GG

Hello grahamcg,

I would be concerned as well if my iPhone was not recognized by iTunes. Thank you for providing all the information with the steps you took in regards to your wife's iPhone. I found an article with a few more steps you can take (you can skip the steps you have already taken):
