Unlock Iphone 4

My phone carrier just unlocked my phone for me. I have backed up my apps and info to my computer, now what do I do to finish the process? They told me to plug in my phone, back it up, delete everything then itunes will take over. I'm hesitant to delete everything. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
