no wi-fi connection

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can someone with some knowledge help?

Recently BOTH my MacBook Pros (2010) have consistently failed to find my wireless router. This is a new problem and applies to both laptops - but not necessarily at the same time.

Other networks appear on the list - but my own network does not appear, repeatedly, then suddenly it does appear and all is OK.

Our iPhones NEVER have this problem. Nor do my 'smart' TVs.

So it seems that it is not a router problem.

Once logged on neither laptop drops the connection; but if I close the laptops and reopen them it is a matter of chance if it "sees" my router.

Has some recent "upgrade" caused this problem please? And more important is there a cure?

Bill,

Try changing the wireless channel on the router and see if that helps. Sometimes a neighbor installs a new or more powerful router on the same channel you're using and it screws things up. It'll be somewhere in the wireless settings on the router.

Thank you Bob

Before I try changing channel (which I will!): the laptops are (as I type) within 2-3 metres of my router so do you think that being overpowered by another router is likely? The iPhones seem to find the network automatically and easily at a greater distance.

The reason for not changing channel immediately is that I dont want to risk screwing up my other connections JUST before as I have an important (to me!) project to complete! Or will the various devices just find the router whatever the channel?

Thank you again for bothering to reply.

I think it's a possibility, and it's very easy to try. Obviously, do it when you're comfortable. Wifi problems are a bear to troubleshoot sometimes. I also have a mid-2010 and in my case it turned out to be an internal cable that had failed. That seems unlikely on two machines at the same time though. The point is it took quite awhile to figure that out. The other thing you can try is to go to System Preferences / Network. Choose your wifi network, then click Advanced and the wifi tab. Drag your network to the top of the list and use the - key to get rid of any unneeded networks you may have in there. Sometimes the list gets long over time and that screws things up as well.

I've had the same problem, coincidentally since I got an iphone. D-link has changed my channel a couple of times, and we've also created a new network for me; in addition, I've removed all other networks so only this new netwok is now visible on my MacBook Pro.

My Apple TV, ipod touch and the iphone are all fine. I can be working away on the Mac and for some reason the wifi seems to turn off. I've found if I shut down and restart, the connection is re-established most of the time. I phoned D-Link because I have a DIR-601 router, and after a few attempts to try to get this business to stop happening, they've told me it's the mac's problem and not the router (which makes sense).

Does anyone know how I can fix it once and for all? I'm running Mavericks 10.9.2 on a 2010 MacBook Pro, my ipod Touch is a couple of years old - running system 6, I have Apple TV software version 6.1, and an iphone 5S (system 7).

Have you tried this, which I suggested to Bill earlier?

Hi Bob

Have been away for a few days but everything continues well - so, thanks again.

Both laptops logged on first time on my return and have been turned on and off three or so times and have found the networrk each time.

I suggested (in another thread) to a guy called Adrian to try what you had suggested and his early report was that it had "so far" worked for him too.

So, fingers crossed, you have cracked it for us.

Thank you again for bothering to help a complete stranger.

All the best

Bill

Tried that first thing, BobRz, but didn't work. My icon's grey, and when I go to Network prefs it says wifi's on but it can't find my network. If I shut down and start up again, the wifi's restored.

As I said before, this all began (coincidentally?) when I brought my iphone 5s home. All my devices (including iphone) work fine, just not my macbook. I mean. ***? (not to put too fine a point on it...) 😢

Let me tell you how mine behaved. The icon showed that I had a connection once I'd lost it. If I clicked on it it would let me shut off wifi but wouldn't turn back on until I rebooted. In my case it ended up being a bad cable from the Airport card to the motherboard. I've got a mid-2010 15". Changing the cable fixed the problem. Another member pointed this out, so I can't claim I discovered it. The unique symptom was the way the icon behaved. Again, it showed connected after the connection dropped but if I turn off wifi I couldn't turn it on again. There's also the less aggravating approach that worked very well for me until I got this cable issue resolved:
