why wont my phone sync manually with itunes?
When i plug my phone into the computer itunes does not even read that it is there. when i tried with my ipod thats not even up to date, it read it and was able to sync.

It sounds like your iPhone is not recognized in iTunes, but your older iPod is. I would try these troubleshooting steps for iOS devices not being seen in iTunes on Mac:
