How do I close applications, e.g. the latest Maverick OSX upgrade, so that I can then "Trash" it?

Control-click them in the Dock, choose Show in Finder, control-click that icon again, choose Quit, and delete that application.

Not sure what's happening in this case...
The OS X Mavericks upgrade should close itself after the software upgrade and its reboot, and usually deletes itself.
What is the application you're working with, and the error messages you're getting?
⌘Q or the Quit menu item quits the applications.
To folks familiar with Microsoft Windows, the OS X red, yellow and green buttons can be cryptic.
