If you did log into iCloud and set it to lost.
If not, you can't.

Apr 13, 2014 12:31 PM in response to Ally169by Kappy,Only if it has been setup with Find My Phone. No serial number is required. But without Find My Phone and the device being online, there is no way to wipe it clean.
What To Do If Your iDevice or Computer Is Lost Or Stolen
iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi or cellular. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

Apr 13, 2014 12:32 PM in response to Ally169by King_Penguin,Unless you had Find My iPad enabled on it then there isn't any way to locate and/or remotely wipe it, it can't be done via the serial number. If you did have it enabled then you could try locating/wiping it either via http://icloud.com on a computer or Find My iPhone on another iOS device - but that will only work if it's connected to a network.
You've reported it to the police ? You should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc., and if it was a cellular model then you should also contact your carrier.
