iPhone 5s mail not working with gmail

The integrated mail app on my iphone 5s isn't working with gmail. It keeps saying there is an imap server error. I tried restarting my phone, and deleting the gmail account from the phone and creating a new one. I also checked my imap settings at gmail on a web browser. Everything I do (it started with just trying to check my mail, but now that I deleted the account and tried to create a new one, I can't even do that) generates that imap error message. Sometimes the message even appears three or four times from a single action. My username and password are correct, and the standalone gmail app works fine. It's just the integrated mail that doesn't work. My wife seems to have the exact same problem, but I haven't seen anything about Apple having some kind of server problem. I'm using the most current iOS. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Hey karellan78,

Thanks for the question. You are in luck! We have a resource that deals with this specific issue. If the issue is isolated to your Gmail account, you may need to unlock the account from Google’s website:

iOS: Gmail account will not connect to Gmail server

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3058

Resolution

1. Check that your device is connected to the Internet by opening Safari and loading a webpage, such as google.com. If you cannot connect to the Internet, try the steps inthis article.

2. If you have other email accounts on the device, check if those accounts can send and receive email.

3. If the issue is isolated only to the affected Gmail account, visit this website:https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha.

Complete the form to unlock the account.

4. If the issue persists, follow this Google support article.

5. Once the account has been unlocked, or the correct password entered, check that the issue is resolved. If not, remove the affected Gmail account from the device and add it to the device again: Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendars > Add Account > Gmail.

Thanks,

Matt M.
