Could Not Change to that idenity Microsoft Outlook 2011

Hi,

I know there are a few other threads that have been created about this issue all over the web but I am racking my brain and pulling out my hair over this because nothing I have seen works!

Issue:

  • When I click on Outlook it opens an error which says "Could not change to that identiy. An unknown error has occurred in Outlook."
  • I click "Ok" and it brings up the idenity window. I can create a new identity or delete the old identity but as soon as I click "Ok" Outlook gives me the exact same error again.
  • After trying all onscreen options I click "Quit" and an error appears and says "An error occured while launching. An unknown error has occurred in Outlook."

Things I have tried:

  • Uninstall and Reinstall Office 2011 several times
  • Alt/Option and click to use Microsoft Database Utility
    • Rebuild does not change the result.
    • also tried running this directly from Launchpad
  • Moving "~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/" to the desktop and then running Outlook again.

I saw in this thread someone suggested creating a new user and then testing to see whether it worked when signed in as them. Guess what it does! the onlything is the thread is closed or for some reason I cannot reply, hence this new thread.

The person says it could be an issue with the user folder.

Where do I go from here?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I discovered that if I followed these steps in regards to my account name/user folder, it fixed the issue. I do not know why renaming the account/user folder worked by it fixed the issue for me. Hopefully this will give a different perspective for other people who have the same problem.

It also fixed these issues I noticed I was having:

  • An error when I open Excel or Word "There is a problem with the Office Database"
  • Microsoft Document Connection issue I had which was referencing the database.

Hope this ends some people's frustrations.

Also if anyone knows:

  • a more indepth explanation of this error
  • why this happened please post below!
