My imac sound has stopped working after plugging in and removing headphones. Sound works fine with headphones but light still on in headphone jack even whern headphones removed.
This happened once before and I jiggled the head phone jack and it worked. Not working this time

Perform several plug reinsertions into the headphone jack and test again. Seems like the jack's contacts like to stick on occasion causing your problem.
If the micro switch inside the headphone jack is stuck for good this time, then their may not be much that you can do except take it in for repair.
I might try working it with some different 3.5mm jacks, in hopes of unsticking it and then use a USB Griffin iMic or similar device from now on.
