display not working after using external monitor

I was using my Macbook Air last night to watch via my external monitor displayed to a tv. After I was done, I put my macbook Air in "Sleep" mode via the external display. This morning when I startup my Macbook, I have a blank screen. My suspicians are it's still in the "External display" mode. Anyone experienced this before and found a way to switch back to normal display via key sequence or something?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Reset the NVRAM:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
  6. Release the keys.
