Q: slow memory

I have 8GB of memory on my shiny brand new IMac, but the reaction time of some programs seems VERY slow. Any ideas as to what might be causing the problem? I use an anti-virus program and use "Clean my Mac" to remove rubbish from my hard drive

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    This is probably your problem.

First, CleanMyMac and other such "cleaning" apps are worse than useless. Macs do not require this kind of cleaning, and in fact, it can cause performance problems or even damage the system. See The myth of the dirty Mac.

As for anti-virus software, there's a lot of very bad anti-virus software out there. What software are you using?

For more information on solving performance problems, see my Mac Performance Guide.
