I can't figure out how to change my iCloud email address.

When I try to delete the account and create a new one, it asks for the password of my previous Apple account that is no longer active. When I type in that password it won't accept it. I feel like im stuck in a catch 22. I just want to either change the iCloud email address or delete it.
