Updated from what to what? Mavericks?
Run the software update for the Mavericks compatible iPhoto. Look for it in your applications folder along side your old version of iPhoto.

Apr 14, 2014 9:38 AM in response to tillygirlby benwiggy,Please use much more detail:
What do you do? What happens when you do it? What doesn't happen that you expected?
Version numbers of OS and apps; error messages, etc? What model of Mac (year, type)?
Upgrading should not lose data. It's likely that your data is there, but just not recognised by the app.
However: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BACKUP YOU WILL LOSE YOUR FILES AT SOME POINT. Make sure your files are backed up.

Apr 14, 2014 10:32 AM in response to tillygirlby Eric Root,Check your user folder/Pictures to see if the iPhoto Library is there. If so, after doing what leroydouglas suggested, you should be able to recover them.
The current version of iPhoto is 9.5.1.
If you have that version, try rebuilding the iPhoto Library.
