Please Help

my macbook pro, non retina display, has a black screen when it turns on. It makes the turn on sound, battery light, and I can turn on my keyboard lights but other than that it will not boot. Faintly on the back of the screen I can see something (white and black) but other than that nothing, About two or three weeks ago I did update it to Mavericks. I'm in Costa Rica right not and wont be back to the USA until late may or early June, so I can't go to an apple store.

Hi bgordon12,

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.

You can try these troubleshooting steps first if your MacBook Pro powers on but you do not see video:

Reset the system

You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.

Reset the resolution

Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:

  1. Start up in Safe Mode.
  2. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
  3. Choose Displaysfrom the View menu to open the preferences pane.
  4. Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
  5. Restart your computer.

You can find these steps and more information here:

All the best,

Jeremy
