Toslink Splitter

Anybody have any advice on Toslink Splitters? I would like to use one to run a second iPod Hi-Fi off of my AirPort Express with Toslink through the wall to another room.

I could be wrong, but there is no such a simple toslink splitters as what we use as analogue RCA or Minijack splitters. If the cost is not an issue, there are some DC which offer a multipule digital outputs, but you need another optical cable (which can be quit long) to connect with your iPod HiFi at your another room.

My best advise is to buy another Airport Express and link it with your existing WiFi system.

Hi,

Thank you for letting me know about this toslink splitter product. However, I would like to make the following comments even I have not tried this product before:-

1. In audiophile market, users always prefer coaxial digital cable then Toslink optical cable,as they beleive that the sound produces via the Toslink connection is not as good as the coaxial cable (RCA,BNC or Balance), the only exception is the AT&T optical cable.

2. The length of the digital cable is always an issue, something longer than 2 meters is the maximum, again, unless using the AT&T optical cable.

3. I have tried to use a RCA splitter for 2 RCA coaxial digital cables, and the sounds are less details and much thinner with distortion.

Therefore, I can see some sorts of distortion from this toslink splitter, and bear in mind that it is very unlikely that you can get a 3 meters toslink cable in the market.

Therefore, we need to pay almost US$500 for a special digital convertor unit for the multi digital outputs, in order to avoid of losing the orginal sound quality. However, this unit will not solve the length issue which I mentioned above

Here are the Toslink items I'll be adding to my AirPort express along with the second iPod Hi-Fi.

Total Signal® TOSLink Splitter
Acoustic Research AP080 Digital Toslink Optical Cable w/polished curved lens (3 feet)
Acoustic Research PR181 Fiber Optical/Toslink Digital Cable (6 feet)

First Hi-Fi is now connected via GRIFFIN TECHNOLOGY Xpress Digital Audio Cable for Airport Express.

Will keep you advised.

I bet the Toslink components that you have selected will work just fine for running two iPod HiFi from an Airport Express.

I just looked up how to build your own Toslink splitter (and to convert to coax). A Toslink receiver (that does everything) costs about $5. A Toslink transmitter costs about $2.50 (at electronics hobby shops). You only need a standard 74HC04 ic to generate coax output, or have a single receiver drive as many transmitters as you want. You are not doing any bit rate conversions, and the maximum speed is only about 5 megabit, so keeping the outputs bit perfect shouldn't be a problem.

You can also readily buy Toslink cables in 1, 2 and 3 metre lengths. Please do advise how you like the results.

Please be advised, we have shelved the Toslink Splitter idea and have purchased a second AirPort Express to include the second iPod Hi-Fi in our all Apple household sound system.
The ability to pick the speaker you want via its own AirPort from iTunes or Airfoil giving our two Macs the option of using one or both speakers was the coolness factor we had to go with.
