Q: Slow MacBook

I have a late 2009 Macbook running OSX 10.8.5 with 2GB RAM and it's running very slow. Can Apple fit more memory in store? If so, how can I organise this and roughly how much is it likely to cost?

MacBook, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

To find out how much memory your system supports, go to apple menu>about this mac>more info>system report>Hardware> Model Identifier:          MacBook X,Y

Where X and Y defines your model.

Based on is, you might find out how much memory your Mac supports.

My mac, for example, is a 5,2 model. The maximum memory level is until 6 GB.

    The model 1,1 (Early 2006) can use 2gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    The model 2,1 (Late 2006 & Mid 2007) can use 3gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    The model 3,1 (Late 2007) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    The model 4,1 (Early 2008) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
The model 5,1 (Late 2008, Aluminum Unibody) can use 8gb of 204 pin 1066mhz PC3-8500 RAM
    The model 5,2 (Early 2009, 2.0GHz Model Only) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    The model 5,2 (Mid 2009, 2.13GHz Model Only) can use 6gb of 200 pin 800mhz PC2-6400 RAM
The model 6,1 (Late 2009, White Unibody) can use 8gb of 204 pin 1066mhz PC3-8500 RAM
The model 7,1 (Mid 2010, White Unibody) can use 8gb of 204 pin 1066mhz PC3-8500 RAM

Thanks, but perhaps I wasn't clear. I am aware that I can fit more memory into my MacBook, its just that I'm wondering if this can be done if I take my laptop to the Apple Shop. Do I need to make an appointment and roughly how much does it cost? That way, I'll know whether its worthwhile doing or if I should just buy a MacBook Air. Thanks

Sorry about that. So, yes, you can take your macbook at a apple store. There, an apple technician will explain all about.

If worthwhile you buy a new macbook,  depends. What will be the main purpose of your new macbook? 'cause with a memory upgrade, you will see a great performance instead do you see now. And will be cheaper.

Hi, your reply surprised me!, i got a 5,2 model with 2.13GHz dual core like you, and is I had understood the maximiun allowed for that model is 4GB. The online apple manual says the same also (MacBook: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support)

Can you please confirm that you have 6 GB memory installed?.

    Thanks!
