Did you buy the adapter from Apple, if not then either return and purchase the correct adapter. Not all adapters are created equally. Next check the TV's inputs to select the correct input. Finally your iMac is too old to expect audio to go throught the HDMI, in addition to the HDMI input if you want audio you will need an additional audio cable run from the computer to the TV.

Yes I would like to see the Amazon link. However I would probably recommend using another output rather than HDMI, if your TV has VGA then I'd recommend going mini-DVI to VGA. You can find that adaptor at:

This is Apple's USA store, if you are outside the US you will need to use the store in your country.

what i dont understand is why it reads the tv being plugged in but wont display the imac image? nobody i know has had a problem with this adaptor....could it be the new maverick update? i do have vga yes....but i was hoping not to use it as i have something else already occupying its port which i use at the same time as wanting to use this screen. plus the fact i have already made a purchase on the tools needed to connect through hdmi. could it be a setting?

Difficut to say why it won't work, but my guess is your vintage iMac (about 2007) was never designed to output via HDMI. Your adapter appears correct (thanks for the Amazon link) so if you want to persist, you can contact Amazon and request and exchange to check it. But I suspect you will need to use VGA or if your TV has it DVI which would mean using a mini-DVI to DVI adapter.

One last thought is you could invest in an Apple TV and then do it wirlessly. That would work too but requires and AppleTV to accomplish it, of course you can use the AppleTV for streaming other data too including video, photos, music etc....
