Kernel panic in Mavericks

Hi, I haven’t found any help searching the forum and I’ve decided to post.

I have a Macbook Pro that is having kernel panic almost any time I use it on the go.

When it’s on my desk connected to the external monitor works like a clock, when I travel quite certainly a kernel panic will kick in. Then the machine restarts and works pretty good.

I run disk utility every now and then and all is fine, no errors reported.

I can’t find what’s the problem and I would like your help.

The problem appeared after some time I’ve installed a Samsung SSD and upgraded from Lion to Mavericks.

Specs of the machine are as follow:

Macbook Pro 15 inch Mid 2010

Intel core i5

8GB 1067 MHz DDR3

SSD 250GB 840 Evo

Besides from this the MB Pro works perfect.

Here is the last report.

Thanks for all help you can give

G.Alby,

have you recently upgraded your RAM? The “0x000000000000000000000000000000000000” values in the Memory Module lines towards the bottom of your post suggest that this RAM might not be fully compatible with your MacBook Pro.

Some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defective NVIDIA GPU. Since you’re getting GPU panics, yours might be one with the defect. Apple had a gratis servicing program for this model’s defect that lasted for three years from the date of the MacBook Pro’s purchase; they still offer the servicing program, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend making an appointment at your nearest Apple store, to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro to confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has this defect.

Hi, and thanks for your answer.

Yes i did upgraded the ram from 4GB to 8GB. Although it was more than a year ago and never had issue from the memory upgrade.

Troubles started after SSD and Mavericks which I upgraded in one go.

Is there anything else according to you that might suggest kernel panics when the machine is traveling?

Thanks again

Hi Andy,

Apple claims there's no longer free repair for my Mac.

They say though that even if program was still open, I wouldn't be eligible for it as to the fact kernel panic my Mac is experiencing wouldn't be covered in that program.

Now I'm not sure what you mean with TS4088 problem, is that a problem because of the Ram upgrade?

Would than be enough to change the Ram to a compatible kind?

I’m asking this because with Lion I never had this problem I’m having now with Mavericks.

Thanks for helping

What you're experiencing is a GPU panic, and is indeed the "TS4088" problem.

There's no workaround other than replacement of the logic board, which is no longer free.

However, you may want to see if Apple is willing to either perform the replacement at a lower cost or at least offer you a discount on a new machine.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if the GPU is bad, there's nothing the software can do to work around it.

The panic looks very much like hundreds seen here which were covered. Eligibility was/is determined by a special 'VST' video test which gave a simple pass/fail result on screen. As I posted, some users here have specifically said that they got free repairs even well after the 3 year limit... you may have to press the point & ask for the test; then if it fails, do more pressing.
