Why Are my ssd backups so big?

HI There

I'm using a Macbook air and backing up to my NAS using time machine. The question I have is on the "about this Mac" section it say's I have 80gb of backups on the SSD. I've heard something about local back ups? and mavericks will make space for date when needed but there's nothing major I need backing up so would rather have the ssd clear of backups.

Thanks

Aaron

Since TimeMachine's local backups are 'intelligent' there's not good reason to turn them off, especially when you will be away from your TimeMachine backup drive for a lengthy period. As you need space for your data TimeMachine deletes backups. It isn't 'wasting' any space at all. But if you insist on living dangerously...

To disable local backups enter the terminal and type:

sudo
tmutil disablelocal

To re-enable local backups, enter the terminal and type:

sudo
tmutil enablelocal

You'll have to enter your admin password. When you disable local backups the current backups will be deleted which can take a while so don't immediately power down or put the computer to sleep.
