I got a phone call and tried to add this number to contacts but it is not showing up

I have a new iPhone 5C but this is happenning with my wife's new iPhone 5S as well: I will get a phone number from someone and within the 'phone' app; I go to 'recent' tab, tap on the ℹ and then tap on the "Create New Contact" option at the bottom and it appears to add the contact into contacts; but it does not. It does not show up in the same phone's contact application nor does it get transferred to the iCoud to share. In fact, in the phone application's "contact" button it is not present either. Now, when I manuall add a contact to the 'Contacts' app; everything works (contact gets updated automatically to all iCloud devices). What's up?

iPhone 5c, iOS 7.1

Let me answer this one. I have both a hotmail account and the iCloud account that I share with the family. I had to go to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - scroll to bottom where it says: "Default Account" and select the iCloud account.

Basically, I think when I transitioned to the iPhone from the iTouch, the settings transferred over (settings which must have worked better back in the iTouch days but not in the iPhone days). Anyway - all fixed.
