If you download an app with your apple id, does apple somehow link your device's serial number or something to it? If it does, what exactly do they connect from your device to the account (udid, some kind of serial code?)?
All downloads (free or paid) are tied to the apple ID that you are signed into when you download the content.

The device is "associated" with your Apple ID. Don't really know the specifics, but the associated device is housed in your Apple ID information. New IDs can only be associated with a device every 90 days.
