my itunes crashes when burning a cd

whenever I try to burn a playlist to a cd, itunes crashes. It was working before the latest updates of my computer and itunes. When I say burn cd, the progress bar moves but no next then when it gets to the end nothing else happens and itunes stops responding. spinning wheel just keeps spinning. My media is stored on an external hard drive. I can post the itunes report that was sent but it is quite long.
