plug in earphones and headphones into the iMac and it was soft

I plugged in my earphones AND headphones and even at full volume, the audio was very soft.

Is there any way to solve this?

This has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the audio socket OR selecting the output sound device (which is for some reason, automatic.)

And the audio jack is plugged all the way in.

Hello tfcewan,

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your headphones on your iMac. I recommed resetting the PRAM for the issue you described:

Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.
