i want to reset my whole i pod but i dont want to get rid of my photos or songs

What do you mean reset?

A reset is siilar to a reboot of your computer.

Do you mean restore?

Please explain.

Sync it to your Mac or whatever device was used to originally obtain your songs first.

Import all your photos to iPhoto or whatever you would use for a digital camera.

Then, you can safely restore your iPod to its factory new condition. If yours is the current production iPod Touch iOS 7.1 will be installed and you will not be able to reinstall iOS 6. If in doubt of which model you have, write back.
