how to connect to closest airport

My MacBook is located next to an Airport Express, but when I look at Airport Utility the Mac is connected to the main router hub.

How can I can connect the MacBook to the closest Airport Express?

Thanks

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

In theory, your MacBook should connect to the base station with the strongest perceived signal. The one with the greater (less negative) RSSI value (as seen from your MacBook.) However, in practice that is not always the case as you have seen.

One "trick" is to place your MacBook near the Express, and then, turn WI-FI off, then on from the AirPort icon on the OS X menu bar.
