How do I know what carrier SIM card to buy I purchased iphone 4 without sim

What carrier sim card to purchase? I purchased my iphone from a guy on the streets without sim and I don't want to waste money purchasing a sim that won't work in my iPhone 4 because I don't know if it's unlocked or whose my wireless provider sprint AT&T or t mobile please help
