Why can't i update my ipad to iOS 6 or higher?
I am trying to update my ipad form iOS 5.1.1 to six or higher, but it want let me. why?

The first generation iPad cannot go any higher than iOS 5.

If it's an iPad 1, then you cannot. See:

If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

If an update is available there will be an active Update button. If you are current,
then you will see a gray screen with a message saying your are up to date.

My first generation iPad is 4 years old. I paid $900 for it and now it won't update to the latest operating system which means I can't use all the latest apps. This is ridiculous. Is there any alternate to this?
Only alternative is to use the existing apps that work well on the device and forgo updates on your primary apps, you will not lose any functionality, simply won't gain any.
