Safari slow

Hi,

suddenly also my Safari is slower than slow on most websites - blue band stops in the middle, if I stop loading (clicking the X in the address field) and reload this often helps.

Here I attach my EtreCheck-Protocol. Any idea? Thanks!!

Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions. All the extensions you have installed could be slowing Safari down as well. You can turn off extensions to test for the Extensions tab.

TunneBlick is also problematic. Uninstall instructions > https://code.google.com/p/tunnelblick/wiki/cInstall

In what way do you think Tunnelblick is "problematic" and slowing Safari such that Tunnelblick should be uninstalled?

If Tunnelblick is not running, it uses only hard drive space. Installing Tunnelblick doesn't cause anything to be automatically loaded when the system is started or a user is logged in. It loads a kext (for the tun or tap interface) dynamically -- only when a VPN is in use. Tunnelblick uses about 30 MB of hard drive space -- the same as four or five songs in iTunes.

If Tunnelblick is running but is not connected to a VPN, Tunnelblick has a negligible footprint:

  • On any relatively new computer (my 2011 MacBook Pro, for example), it uses 0.0% of CPU because it is just waiting for you to click on the icon and do something.
  • Of course it uses memory (typically 60 MB or so) but that is less than 2% of a 4 GB memory, and less than, for example, Calendar (80 MB) or Preview (96 MB).
  • It doesn't perform any disk activity.
  • The only network activity that it performs is to check for updates once every 24 hours, which is a single https: "GET" request. (Compared to dozens or hundreds of "GET" requests on a typical web page.)

If you are connected to a VPN, it is probably for a good reason (privacy, security, access to geographicly restricted media, etc.), so you probably want it connected. Of course, there is CPU and network overhead associated with sending everything through the VPN, so if you don't need to be connected to a VPN, you shouldn't be. (Even with the overhead, there are even some rare situations where web-browsing can be done faster over the VPN because the VPN compresses everything.)

So, why do you say Tunnelblick should be uninstalled?

If safari starts to go slow then this worked for me after months of searching.

Simple as it was this is all i did.

When in safari, top left of screen click on safari then preferences then advanced and then untick internet plug ins.

Found this on net after searching and almost using mackeeper, now thankfully no need as it works perfectly and fast once again just like new!!!!!!! with out any anti virus ********.

I too have been having this problem - but I don't have any of the programs mentioned installed.

It seems to be getting worse and I assumed that it was a problem with my ISP - EE in the UK - but it is perhaps more likely that it's my iMac 27 inch.

I've tried unticking Internet Plug Ins as suggested but so far that hasn't helped.

What baffles me is that when the blue bar stalls, very - but not always - often it can be tickled into life by clicking on the blue bar, highlighting it and hitting Enter again.

Any further thoughts gratefully received.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History and Web Site Data. The down side is it clears all cookies.Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site.

I have same issue, and I've responded to 2 other posts similarly.

It is definitely a Safari issue, as Chrome has none of the same issues on the same sites simultaneously. I recommend installing Chrome until Apple can address the issues introduced into Safari since the upgrade. The very next time I used Safari after my upgrade to 10.10.3, these problems became apparent. It seemed to get worse as the days went by, but maybe that was just my frustration level. After installing Chrome, I can again browse without frustration.

Apr 15, 2015 5:27 PM in response to Stef99

I'm also having the same problems. It's been going on for a few days now. It's not a constant problem, but is starting to happen much more frequently. I've tried all of the recommended fixes without and improvement. I'm not a tech guy, but this definitely seems to be a problem with Safari. I don't have the problem running Firefox.

Hoping that Apple can troubleshoot and fix this issue soon.

Safari is non-existent on my ipad2 (iOS 9.2.1).Literally, you open the icon, screen sites white for about a minute then it goes to main menu. I know what caused this problem, i changed the original email account linked to the iPad, for iCloud. I couldn't keep my email address after ditching an ISP - lesson learned, use gmail or yahoo for an email address to register an iPhone or iPad. Deleted and reinstalled the OS, from scratch, it gives my safari for about a week, then it doesn't work. No cookies clearing or re-booting helps. Now my iPhone 6s,(ios9.3) has fun with safari, 20 seconds of lockout for each page, scrolling - another 20 seconds, per scroll. Photon browser works perfectly, no speed drop whatsoever on the same sites safari can't load. I clear my cache and re-boot once a day. It got so bad on the old iPhone 6s, that i had it replaced; apple music didn't work either. I think that the problem is not in the iOS, i think it is in iCloud. Maybe it needs a re-write. I have had this issue with iCloud backup On and Off. Apple should free up the default browser, we should be able to use one that works.

Mar 28, 2016 10:58 AM in response to Eric Root

Thanks Eric, I spoke to one person for Apple, we backed up iPhone to mac, then re-installed OS. Did not log into any apple id, Safari worked perfectly. Soon as I restored, from mac and signed in, back to slow. The ipad2 problem is definitely related to the iPhone 6s problem. The tech said i should talk to someone at iCloud support. I am talking to them now, their solution is to turn off iCloud or not log into iTunes. Which i hardly think is the intention of Apple's business model.

Mar 29, 2016 4:34 PM in response to Stef99

I did restore the iPad2 to original, first I backed it up to the computer and then installed 9.3. When the iPad came to life I used new device and continued setting everything up. I only installed one app as Apple Support is suggesting it is an app (it only had three on it: Kindle, Facebook & Messenger). Since Facebook is known to be an iffy app, I chose Kindle. Safari worked beautifully. I remembered I had not turned on iCloud Photo Library, i did that. I went back to browsing books on the Amazon site; within a minute Safari died. It would not restart, white screen.I immediately went back and turned off iCloud Photo Library. I did a hard reboot of the iPad and left iCloud Photo Library off, Safari works like it did after restore. I have not checked music yet. When I looked in diagnostics Safari had 4 events all crashes, the words 'Is not fatal' were missing. Just now I turned on 'iCloud Music Library'; Safari immediately froze and died. I turned off iCloud music library and then did a hard reboot and Safari works again. I am not sure what the relationship is between Safari and iCloud music and photos. These two services are being offered by other vendors - amazon & google, you'd think Apple would want a piece of the pie. Lesson learned, if you are going to use your iPad to play music and show pictures only, turn on iCloud library. If you want to use and iPad for other things, turn library off.

Hi. I have been dealing with this problems for the last month. Here is my problem and what I did:

When I hit "New Tab" in Safari, it takes forever (5-10 seconds) before the tab shows up.

When I click in the address-bar (were I search in Google and put in the website I want to go to) i takes forever (5-10 seconds) before I can write something.

So, what does a person with some computer experience do? Uninstall the program and re-install. But that doesn't work in OS X. So i re-installed OS X El Capitan. The problem was fixed, Safari was fast again. But, the next day, same problem. First I thought it was One Drive (because it was the ONLY program I had installed other than the pre-installed apps). But it wasn't One Drive. Then I though it was my Bootcamp installation (had no idea why, but why not try and remove it), so I formatted the whole drive and re-installed OS X El Capitan again. Safari worked perfectly, I could install One Drive, still worked perfectly.

THEN: When I got to my work, and installed the printer I use, Safari was slow again (as described above). It doesn't make sense, but after I installed that printer, Safari was slow and laggy again. Go figure?

And YES: I have tried all the, delete this and delete that. Doesn't do it for me...

Safari slow
