If it is at the upper right (in the menu bar) it is likely the Orientation lock. To remove, open Control Center (on the home screen swipe up with one finger from below the bottom of the screen) and then tap the icon at the far right of the top row -- the same icon as appears in the menu bar when Orientation Lock is on.
