how do i connect airport to my home wireless network

My macbook is connected to my verizon wireless network at home the signal is week in the garage and i was told that the airport express would extend the range of the wireless network. I plugged the airport in in the garage but my computer doesn't see the airport. How do I connect?

Unfortunately, what you were told was not correct.

The AirPort Express can wirelessly extend the signal from another Apple router.....but it would not be compatible with a wireless router from another manufacturer for that purpose.
