Your question is like asking what is the best car. If there were one right answer, everyone would buy that type of car and nobody would buy anything else.
Whatever printer you get, make sure it is AirPrint compatible. This will make printing from your iPhone and iPad best and most complete. Here is a list:
I like Epson all in ones - the more expensive models for their color reproduction as I deal with images, graphics, etc.
There's no one right answer to this question.
Personally, I have a Canon PIXMA MG3120 (the MG3520 is the current version of this printer). I've had it a couple years and it works great with my 2010 MacBook Pro running Mavericks. I use it wirelessly for printing and scanning and it's AirPrint capable so I can use it with my iPhone. I've had no complaints about it. Consult the list linked above to find a model that best suits your needs.
I wish a few more users would take the time to share their experiences with printers. I have had a Canon MX870 for several years that is nothing but a perpetual headache -- it needs to be reconnected to the network three or four times a day or it simply will not print. There are lots of posts on this topic and I have tried every possible solution with no luck. I am reluctant to buy another Canon -- this experience has left me doubting their products. I am also reluctant, based on past experience, to consider an HP product. So that pretty much leaves Epson -- but which Epson? I am looking for an all-in-one wireless printer that will STAY CONNECTED to the network. Top-quality printing would be nice, but frankly, it's not on the top of my priority list. I just want to be able to use the printer, scanner and copier without wasting an hour of my day on maintenance. If you have had positive experience in this regard, please take a few seconds to post your recommendations. Thanks. (I am running the latest version of Mavericks on a new Mac Pro.)
Sorry to hear you've had so many problems with Canon. I've never had any connectivity problems with my Canon. In fact, I've had to replace my wireless router, in recent months. Setting up the new router, I used the same network name and password and the printer automatically connected, no reconfiguration necessary. Maybe you just got a lemon.
Based on posts I have read concerning the MX870, an awful lot of lemons are in circulation.
Used HP6520 (or 6525) for Mavericks and now Yosemite no issues. HP has specific drivers and software for this proiter for most of the Apple OS's.
Thanks for the suggestion. Based on your comment and others I have read elsewhere, I have ordered an HP printer.
I've been very happy with the Epson WorkForce printers.
I've had 3 HP printers.
Each one had to be replaced in less than a year.
They each had horrible performance.
I will never buy an HP again.
OTOH, I have had good luck with Cannon Printers.
However, in the long run, no printer lasts as long as it should.
i bought an AirPrint compatible printer and it does work great via Wi-Fi from my iPhone, iPad as well as it gives high definition print out from my MacBook.
