OSX Software update server

I have set up software update servver on our mac server running mavericks and server 3.1.1. How do I check that clients are actually getting updates from our server and not going to apples servers?

The way I checked was via Apple Remote Desktop and then sending a Unix command to all the Macs, it would be possible to create a report in JAMF's CasperSuite to do the samething.

The following command will ask a Mac what server it is using, it the result is empty i.e. it does not exist it is defacto using the default setting which is to go direct to Apple's servers for updates.

defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL

If your doing this via Apple Remote Desktop you need to specifically run the command via user 'root' so it will work even if no user is logged in. It will not work if the selected Mac is not turned on or connected to the network.
