Can I use a 27 inch external monitor on a 21.5 imac mid 2011

I've decided to buy a 27 inch external monitor and use it with my imac 21.5 mid 2011. Will the imac work with the larger display? I'm connecting the imac and the monitor via HDMI.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
