win7word doc email to mac conflict

If I send a Win7Word document via gmail to my sister's new Mac, she says the formatting is mangled, columns don't line up, lines run off the edges of the page, and lines are even crooked! I've tried saving in all the possible formats, what am I doing wrong?Could gmail's outgoing encoding cause a conflict?

Office for Windows and Office for Mac are not 100% compatible, as you have discovered. Formatting often gets mangled when opening a document on different versions of Office. Use more simple formatting or have her install Windows and the same version of Office for Windows that you are using. If she does not have to edit the document, convert it to a pdf document before emailing it to her.

The issues you are seeing have nothing to do with email.

I had finally resorted to saving it as a PDF, after trying every other option on the "save as" menu, (as well as looking for similar topics on every support site even tangentially related) but, as you say, it's an inflexible and klunky solution.

I'm grateful to you for explaining it, and doubly so for making me feel a bit less like the village idiot. I hadn't yet sent it to her, fearing she'd /thwack me for sending yet another version. The likelihood of her letting Windows sully her beloved Macs is about the same as the US paying down its deficit to a number less than 11 digits. I wish I could afford a Mac.

I should have known to start here.
